Established in 2024, Circuitous Vineyard’s primary goal is to cultivate premium fruit for sale to others from which world-class Cabernet Sauvignon can be crafted.
Who Are We?
Circuitous Vineyards is located in the Southernmost region of Alexander Valley, immediately adjacent to Chalk Hill AVA in Sonoma County. This 20-acre property was planted to roughly 8 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, clone 338 grafted to 1103P rootstock, and is situated on a South-facing aspect rising up some 400 feet off the Chalk Hill Valley floor. With slopes from 5-25 degrees, this area offers ideal growing conditions for fruit to mature.
The Vineyard
The soils of this property have been mapped and shown consistent with Felta very gravelly loam, which the USDA considers a premier "Grand Cru" caliber soil for growing high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon. Primarily found on the dissected terraces and rolling hillsides of Sonoma County, this soil is known to be an innate quality of the Chalk Hill region.
Named for the chalky white ash and volcanic tuff deposited by Mount Saint Helena, Chalk Hill escapes much of the heavy cooling coastal fog of some neighboring AVAs and results in a warmer climate, ideal growing condition for this varietal.
World-Class Grapes
The specialized soil in this category, FaD and FaE, solves the exact risks that standard loams present: the extreme gravelly contents and volcanic components displace the water-retaining silt and clay, facilitating the rapid, sharp drainage in which Cabernet vines thrive, while also promoting deep penetration of the root system through the old volcanic alluvium and metamorphic rock with the result of extracting distinct flavors and complex minerality.
The gravelly, lean structure of this soil keeps fertility low to moderate, naturally taming the vine’s vegetative growth and providing a more balanced canopy thus directing sugars into the grape clusters while the rocky surface absorbs and retains heat during the Northern California summer radiating back to the low-hanging fruit at night & promoting even, optimal ripening.
